First a few questions would need to be answered. Does he have any other major health problems? Where is the hernia and how big is it? Is there any bowel trapped in the hernia? For the most part, it is a low risk procedure. We do things like this all the time and it rarely if ever gets me excited, especially if it is elective. It is usually pretty straightforward.
