The dimensional differences between the 223 and 556 are practically negligible to the point where both are interchangeable. Basically a 556 is like a 223+P round.

556 and 223 are the same size dimensionally. The 556 round has more powder and fires at a higher pressure than 223, giving the 556 faster velocities for a given bullet weight.
