I agree with your general contention that it's probably not a huge deterrent, but do you REALLY need to berate a group of people that are actually going to work every day? Once again a private company hired by the airport or airlines to search individuals before they enter their property is not the same as the federal government. There is a document which founded this country that prohibits what they are doing. Not sure how to make it any clearer to you.

They tended to be the last guys in the plant and first out...they were never happy when I kept them over to help an electrician diagnose a highly technical machine problem...

Didn't read the article but being a frequent flyer I know that you can p**** through even if you dont have an ID. You'll just be checked thoroughly as in groped more.
