Weird story. I thought all three were going to come out a year apart in December.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - December 2012
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug - December 2013
The Hobbit: There and Back Again - December 2014
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring - December 2001
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers - December 2002
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King - December 2003
Why would Jackson ever even plan on releasing one of the Hobbit movies in July when his track record thus far has been nearly a year apart to the day in December?

I'm a huge Tolkien fan and must say I was disappointed by this. The action was too busy to be enjoyable, much unlike the LOTR series. It also moved at a snails pace with too much embellishment on story locales.
The first trilogy was done masterfully. This one just lacks in engaging characters and you don't bond with any of them. Not even Gandalf or Bilbo. I couldn't make a connection with any of the characters and honestly kept looking at the clock.
I really loved the Bilbo/Gollum guessing game scene. That alone made this movie for me.

That's what happens when you take one single book and try to stretch it into three full-length movies. I didn't think it was bad (not as good as any of the LOTR movies) and will reserve my overall opinion once I've seen all three. I do see where you're coming from on the lack of character development as compared to LOTR and the scene at Bilbo's house could have been cut in half.
