Writer for Episode VII has been chosen.
Was it really just a week ago that Disney acquired Lucasfilm and the new Star Wars trilogy was announced? Because things sure seem to be moving fast ever since. Case in point: Michael Arndt, who was just revealed yesterday to be writing a treatment for the trilogy, has now been confirmed to be penning the screenplay for Star Wars: Episode VII as well. Plus, pre-production on the film has begun.
Here's the official word, via Star Wars.com:
"As pre-production of Star Wars: Episode VII begins, Lucasfilm has confirmed that award-winning writer Michael Arndt will write the screenplay for the new Star Wars film. As revealed in the ongoing video series posted here on StarWars.com, Kathleen Kennedy and George Lucas have begun story conferences with Arndt. Arndt won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for writing Little Miss Sunshine (2006), and was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay for writing Toy Story 3 (2010)." via IGN
Also doing the screenplay for the Hunger Games sequel, an untitled Pixar movie, and some Tom Cruise movie called Oblivion. Not a giant list of previous movies but so far of the 2 movies that have been released both were nominated for Oscars and one won.

That will be his role in all things Star Wars from now on. I don't know how much executive decision making power he will have, but they have said that he will be a creative consultant from here on.

The interviews he has done on the buyout that was posted on YouTube he looks and acts like he was forced out almost.

He created the mother ****er... It wouldn't be here without his doing.

He didn't write or direct Empire or Jedi, and look how awesome they were. Especially Empire!

I know, I know...I just cringe at most of the prequels. I chalk it up to old age...his and mine.

The prequels is what happens when he has total control. I just hope that they go on a mission and find a massacre and Jar Jar Binks corpse is displayed like the way Hannibal Lecter did that guard in Silence of the Lambs.

Only then, will I forgive the prequels being made.

He is dead but they could bring him back the way Obi Wan was brought back in V and VI. Or, have 3 sequel episodes and then at the very end have **** and the Gang come out and reveal him as Mr. Wickles underneath that mask.

The Star Wars universe is big enough that Vader isn't necessary. Vader is dead. That story is done.

    Move on.

Looks like there's a nice rumor out there that the guy who wrote the script for Empire may be writing for the new movies.

One of the most high-profile and desirable directing gigs in the business may have been ****igned. J.J. Abrams, the mastermind behind the current Star Trek revival, is reportedly set to direct a new episode of Star Wars, now in development at Disney.

The news comes from The Wrap, where they're citing "an individual with knowledge of the production" and offer no further details. Deadline has chimed in with their own vague source, claiming "it's a done deal with J.J." It's very possible the story will be debunked from either Abrams's Bad Robot or Lucasfilm, but then again, who knows-- the film is set for a 2015 release and should be going into actual pre-production soon, so a director will need to be hired fairly quickly. Now might be the time… but is Abrams the guy?

He's been on the short list for a lot of fans, including our own Sean O'Connell's, and Abrams himself admitted not long ago that he had conversations with Lucasfilm about the project and "I declined any involvement early on." So either he was lying back then, or he's been convinced to take another look. Or Abrams might just be high not he list of directors that the studio wants, but not necessarily hired. The Wrap reports that Ben Affleck had also been in the running for the job-- with none of this news confirmed, is it possible he still is?

We'll bring you updates as we get them, but meanwhile let us know what you think of this potential Abrams-handled Star Wars future.

Some directors believe that the lens flare is like "Cow Bell" and you can always use a little more lens flare.

It could be much worse. Michael Bay directing and there be a bunch of pointless explosions.

The flares in the first ST were a stylistic choice. And he's even said he went overboard.

JJ: Yeah, it’s a weird thing. To me, it’s a little bit like on a scene for scene or shot for shot basis where I’m looking for something like there’s an opportunity to not necessarily put a [xx 10:49] up in front of a light. The kneejerk reaction from the director of photography is usually…it’s usually, “OK, we’ve got to flatten that light because it’s going to flare.” I think it’s one of those things that you want to make sure that, obviously, it’s…To me it’s such a cool beautiful image, the light through the gl****. There are times that I feel like it sort of adds another kind of smart element, and it’s hard to define. But it is a visual taste that I do like. I think there are a couple shots in Super 8 where I just think I should definitely pull back here or there, but I can’t help myself sometimes.

Combine this with Jar Jar Binks, and it would be a feature I would gladly drop eleven bucks on at the theater.

When lens flares happen naturally, so be it. When lens flares are added digitally as is the case with Mr. Abraham's aesthetic tastes... death by hanging.

If I'm choosing between lens flares and terrible direction, awful casting and obnoxious characters that add nothing, I'll take me some flares.

I liked the Bourne movies, though the shaky cam was overdone, especially in the first one. I'll admit, I'm somewhat biased. I'd been a fan of the books for years and thought the original movie fell pretty flat. (Not the original Damon movie, but the old one with Richard Chamberlain I think?)
