Twitter John Michael McGee wants back in

I'm not going to pretend I've ever thought OU should bring him back, but it takes serious balls for a kid to own up to it and make this call.

So, this would be my proposal: He comes back as a preferred walk-on. He makes it through that year as a positive contributor to the team, and we give him his scholly back.

@JLMcCuistion #Sooners 2012 signee John Michael McGee. MT @CLHMcGee: Yeah I'm scared to contact the program I quit on last Aug but that call will be made.

Let's have a meet with the coaches and if they are interested, bring the kid back. He didn't get booted for any bad behavior.
What has he been doing this year? Going to JC, working?

If the coaches want him back then I'm all for it.
He didn't do anything wrong. He just made a rash decision and quit. If any of you have ever played any kind of college athletics then you know how hard and different it is.
Sounds like he knows he made a mistake in his eyes and wants to come back. I have no problem with that.

I like this idea. I would be ok with it. Dan Cody left OU for a year then came back. He turned out to be an AA.

I love the preferred walk-on idea. Kids make mistakes, as we all have, and if he has matured and is willing to work his way back, then why not? We damn sure need the help.

On board with the preferred walk-on bit. Wouldn't be too pleased to hold a scholarship for him. That said, I'm sure some other school will give him a scholarship. That might be better for him as I can't imagine his teammates at OU would welcome him back after he quit like that.

Whatever the coaches decide, I am for! That being said, it creates a bad precedent to allow someone back that quit on there team..

Doesn't really set a bad precedent if they make him work his way back.

Make him pay his way this spring/summer and if he survives Schmidtty then let him back on the team for the fall

Really? Do you know that in the State of Oklahoma it is still technically illegal to have consential anal sex with your wife? How should these crass lawbreakers be dealt with?

Yeah, I know that I'm just saying that there's been guys who have left the team and come back to play. I'm ok with it if he had to work his way back on the team and scholarship.

Money may be a big issue, so a walk-on status may not work.

NateHeupel, you're a ****ing genius!! Seriously, I think that's a great idea. Make him earn it back and prove himself. Don't punish him with Schmitty necessarily, just make him earn it back.

Re: John Michael McGee wants back in

I would think that he would come back as a walk on before he would go to another school on scholarship.

hope we seriously give him a chance ... and while were at it, let that TE from moore back too. he reminded me of another gresham.

  24. #24
I agree with the walk on idea. I'm skeptical that someone who quit before the season started would only quit again when it gets tough. If the coaches want him back I'm sure he'll have to earn it back.

He can get student loans, and if money is really that big of an issue he can get pell grants, too. Bottom line, you earn a scholarship with a solid HS career, but you keep it with hard work and commitment to the team. He's got no currency left on the former or the latter. If he really wants it, he'll prove it.

If I'm being perfectly honest, I don't think so. The coaches came about this >< close to losing the team entirely last year. They'll probably be paranoid of the effect on the team.

That said, I think you give him a shot. Dusty Dvoracek put a kid in a coma and we let him back. He did what it took to pull his shit together, and I'm absolutely proud to call him a fellow Sooner alumnus. If we're going to forgive that, we have to forgive this.

Not sure if he might be coming back or not. Looks like he talked with Patton around 10 days ago. From from the tweets it sounds like Patton may have given him an option to come back. Although, he's been pretty quite about it since then.

Aye but I was made to make mistakes, not fake perfection!

Looks like he's heading to Henderson State University in Arkansas. Not sure if that's a stop on the comeback tour, or the final destination.

I'm fine with him coming back assuming the players are ok with it. Have the team captains talk with him and if they clear him put it up for a group vote

Also, OG John Michael McGee has in fact reached out to the OU staff about rejoining the team at some point. A possibility

I wonder if there's a still a chance here for McGee or Trotter is quoting old info.

Maybe Trotter is getting his info from Landthieves and missed the updates from JMM's twitter page...

The JMM reports came from Patton today during a post-practice press conference. Patton confirmed JMM had begun communicating with the coaching staff about returning to OU.

I dont have a problem with him being allowed to come back, but if it were me I would make it clear that he is on his last strike. One ****up and he is gone, whether its academics, getting in trouble with the police, or just flaking out - he is out the door.

Yes, I knew this. I was just making the point to say that there were players in the past that had to leave the team and come back to be successful.
