Some will maintain that gun laws do change when an individual perishes.

And if he'd driven his car across the playground and run over 27 people would you want to change drivng laws and access to cars? The gun was an automatic but it didn't fire itself.

No. The Netherlands, where that whackjob killed what, 70 some people, doesn't allow firearms.

You know what? Nobody really needs anything until they need it. Right now, I do not need to own an assault rifle. I really don't. However, I have no idea what I might need later on. I own an assault rifle.

An example of that is the police, which routinely carry assault rifles in their vehicles.

(for the moment can we just ignore 'that aint an assault rifle' issue)

Do they need them? No, they don't. Not at this moment. Not for that traffic stop. Not normally, hardly ever. But when they do, they do, and nothing else will do. Thus they have them.

To put it another way, you need an assault weapon for the exact same reason the police do. The police may have to deal with a criminal for which such firepower is needed. Since you are unlikely to be assaulted by a peaceful law abiding person, it makes sense that your concerns are the same as the police.

In essence, your 'need' in this case is not dictated by you. But rather by the person who might assault you (your home/family). The same guy that the responding police might feel they need an assault rifle to deal with.

Either countries w/the least strict or most strict gun laws have the highest incidence of gun derived crimes. Which do you suppose it is?

I was about to give an honest, thought out answer. But it may not be the time yet. And with some of the flippant responses in here, this isn't the thread to post such a response. At least not now.

You won't be able to get guns out of the violent peoples hands with any gun laws. They can either get guns from their family or find these guns on the streets in an illegal manner. Banning guns just ends up with more guns in the black market which means less regulations on who gets them in the end. You can pretty much say the same thing about the war on drugs in this country. We put all drugs on the black market so you can have drugs sold to 15 year old kids. This guy had a gun that isn't legal to sell in Connecticut. And probably nowhere in the north eastern US.

What really makes this sad is this guy went after a school. You won't have guns on school property anywhere in this country. So there was really no way to defend from ****s like this.

How are you going to keep these guns off the black market? How are going to keep a guy from getting a .223 assault rifle that isn't even legal to sell?

Look at how airport security changed after 9/11. Now look at how gun laws have changed after 31 school shootings.

Protip: They haven't changed at all.

I don't want to hear anything except for how we're going to keep our kids safe. I want a cop in every school. I want a single point of entry. I want a tax on gun licenses/sales to pay for it. We've got armed guards at our banks protecting our **** ****ing money. Why not protect our kids?

Then the first one dead would have been that guard sitting at the door. Remember the shootings at the Capitol? The first ones shot were the ones at the door. where do you want the armed protection to stop?

You dont. You make sure law enforcement is equipped enough to mitigate the situation when it happens. There is no perfect system, but what have now if failing like a texas football rebuilding job.

It's not a gun problem. More guns or less guns doesn't fix the problem. We have a systemic societal problem--and it has nothing to do with guns.

Closer to the action than you are.

How is it that an armed lunatic can simply walk into a school full of children?
That is the question that should be answered. He could have walked in there with a couple cans of gasoline and lit the classroom on fire. We need better security in our schools.

What's sad is that this school had security including cameras outside. Someone basically had to buzz him in for him to come in and do what he did.

With his mother as a teacher they may have known him and let him in. also, if he went in before 9:30 there wasn't any security in place. You can't build a wall around everything.

Is anyone seeing this is strange that almost all of these shootings happen in places with more strict gun laws and with some guns that are illegal to purchase or by people that aren't stable enough to get guns legally? Yet in states with less strict laws or open carry laws fewer of these incidents happen.

Has no direct correlation. There is an indirect link, but it's not about guns.

I know it's not a direct correlation but it also says that making laws stricter doesn't mean making things better.

I always remember the shooting at Lubys in Texas. The woman that later became a represenative, Sanchez I believe, lost both her parents that day. Her gun was out in her truck and not with her. She always wondered what would have been different had she been able to have it on her.

Well I'm sure KC has them too but in LV the school district had their own police force. They were armed - both in the patrol cars and on campus.

There's a chance that could happen, but a well trained police officer has a chance to save lives. How else do you stop it?
