There seem to be varying thoughts. I always sang Columbus, my wife always thought it was George Washington.
Not sure if geography has anything to do with it...I am from Oklahoma and she from Kansas.
What did you learn as the response at the end of the song, and where did you reside during childhood?

I had a friend in high school who was taking a test at the end of the first semester so it was near Christmas time. At the end of the test the teach had one of those gimme extra credit questions.
"Who's the most famous reindeer of all?" The choices were something like Amos, Rudolph, Jerry, D'Brickashaw etc.
He chose Amos and made up lyrics for it:
Amos the famous reindeer
Had a very runny nose
And if you ever heard it
You would even say it blows...
Eventhough he gave the wrong answer he still got credit for his creativity.

I just broached this subject with people at work and they never heard of this practice, but I remember singing like this back in Oklahoma, is this just a southwest thing?

It was taught in music cl**** in elementary school. Also I only heard Columbus around here (Oklahoma). Didn't know about the Washington thing until this thread
George Washington just doesn't sound right. It messes up the cadence of the song. It'd be like saying "You'll go down in history - like Fredereick Dougl****"
Although, I never said "Like Lincoln" that is also acceptable as it doesn't mess with the cadence.
