That's understandable. But I wouldn't have known about St. Maarten if I didn't cruise. It's a good way to see a lot of destinations. It gives you a good overview so that you can decide on where to go. We took a tour of Barbedos and got to see where Tiger Woods played golf (Sandy Lane Golf Club in St. James) and where he got married as well. That island was very beautiful and had a very interesting take on education and their economy.

So, I think there are positives and negatives with cruising. I would like to do more traveling though, not by cruising.

Heading out to the Caribbean two weeks from today on a 8-day cruise. Going with four other couples that I graduated from OU with. But, we're all poor and white trash, so we'll be eating up some spray cheese and drinking some trashcan punch!

Cruises have many issues, but I find them generally fun and I'm really looking forward to it. I need to get away.

Leave the string cheese at home. Order 3 entrees every meal

I think most cruises suck aside from Yachts of Seabourn, Windstar, and Regent.

Now the one that I am going to find out about is Disney Cruise. Taking the kids because they wanted to go on it. I have actually heard decent things so we will see. They better have string cheese dammit.

Ive heard wonderful things about the disney cruises as well. They are supposed to give you a two way cell phone that calls and texts your kids for free. It works on the ship anywhere, and even works at one of the private islands. Not a bad deal! Also, I heard they have a lot for the parents to do while the kids are away.

Come on, man. You can do all the research you need on the internet. I didn't know much about St. Maarten either, until I researched it. Then I knew every where I wanted to go and see. You don't have to be at the mercy of schedules and boat time.

That doesn't work for me....the experience of the islands was too good to p**** up. I got to see up close and personal each island myself to make my decision. I got to see all the differences between aruba, grenada, San Lucia, Barbedos, Antigua, St. Maarten, Haiti, and Nasau. They would be pretty difficult to compare by only seeing pictures and reading articles online. You can make all those islands look and sound however you want them. But seeing them up close and personal, and meeting the local people was an experience I wouldn't have gotten otherwise. I was glad to do it that way....but that's my own personal opinion. You obviously made a good choice because that is really the only place that I would want to go and stay at for any length of time. However, like I said, each island is different and offers some really cool stuff.

If you think you got to know those destinations up close and personal by porting for a few hours and going on some cruise "endorsed" excursions, you are fooling yourself. I know many people who claim to hate Jamaica. Every one of them ported there on a cruise. I love going to Jamaica, but I don't climb off a boat in Ocho and get slammed by merchants trying to sell me crap. I go to rural Jamaica. Slow, laid back, easy living that the cruisers never see.
St. Maarten is pretty nice, but it's not even close to my favorite Caribbean destination.

Only booked one or two through the cruise. But we went out to see the islands. They aren't that big. I see what you are saying. But I'm just trying to tell you that I got a good taste of each island. I'm not trying to say I know them intimately. I'm also not against your way of vacationing. I'm just saying that I had a good time and I appreciated my excursions.

Cruising won't be my way of travel or vacationing all the time.

Best time I ever had in the Caribbean was ten days I spent on St John in the USVI back in 2003. 70% of the island is national park, and there are only two tiny towns on the island. It's almost like you have the whole island to yourself.
