Stoops Warning: Offseason type thread ahead

With all the NFL openings assuming the unthinkable and Stoops decided to take off for [insert NFL team here] who would you target as HC?

I have 3 clear options in my head

    Charlie Strong (Louisville HC)

    James Franklin (Vanderbilt HC)

    Gary Patterson (TCU HC)

others I'd be "good" with Pat Fitzgerald (Northwestern HC) Paul Rhoads (Iowa State) & Al Golden (Miami HC)

The obvious response will be "were is Mike,Brent Josh etc" Well IMO If Bob left suddenly I think Mike ends up going with him in some role, I don't think Josh is ready and I don't think Brent is ready. I would think Brent and Josh would need to cut their teeth as a head man elsewhere before OU boosters would give them a blessing

Art Briles, John Gruden or possibly James Franklin, although I don't like the SEC BS he pulled in his final coaches poll ballot.

If Stoops left I wouldnt want any of the above mentioned. Strong has a Law suit pending from a former player, Frankling wouldnt be able to cheat his way into winning at OU and Patterson was yesterdays news. I would leave it up to Joe C to make the right choice and hoped he learned from his past experience of hriring a bad coach (Capel).

    1. Gary Patterson
    2. Pat Fitzgerald
    3. Kevin Sumlin

I actually don't see those three leaving their current situations for OU, though. A little more under-the-radar:

    1. Kyle Whittingham
    2. Gary Andersen
    3. Hugh Freeze
    4. Mike Riley

Is that Mike Riley, the buffoon HC at Oregon State, who totally botched clock management at the end of the first half against the whorns? The same buffoon HC who left a struggling (putting it mildly) QB in for the entire game, when he continually froze in the pocket and turned the ball over?

I gotta go with Sumlin, I do believe he would drop the Aggies like a bad habit if he were offered. If not him then you gotta go with Lovie smith.

    Ah so, mutha fucka.

Well technically it's not the offseason yet so screw people who whine about offseason threads.

However, there are a lot of good coaching candidates out there. Wouldn't be that worried about it.

Since we have decided that half our team needs to be from Cali I think Shaw might be a good one. Heck give Nuweasal another gig.

Shaw's not leaving Stanford for any other college job.

From the original list I'd take Patterson. He's a proven winner and already knows how to recruit in the state of Texas.

Watching the Aggies meltdown if Sumlin left them for Norman would be hilarious.

Not anymore than Stoops is leaving Oklahoma for a pro job.

I'd go with Sumlin first, but I'm not against Patterson either. I'd be really curious if Sumlin would leave. We certainly wouldn't have a shortage of interested applicants.

Al Golden? He's as dirty as they come, isn't he? I don't want any coach who's been soiled by "Da U"

I don't think Stoops will leave until after the 2018 season. After that, he'll have put in a solid 20 years, then anything's game.

Winning the way that he has at Oregon State is pretty miraculous. The fact that his team was even in position to beat Texas says a lot.

If you want to toss a coach aside for screwing up clock management or sticking with a struggling QB, OU should have axed Stoops many times.

Anyone who mentions Jon Gruden's name as a great option for a head coaching option, obviously knows nothing about Jon Gruden.

I can write you ****ers a book.

You don't want him near your organization in any way, shape or form unless he's announcing your game.

He's just a popular name to throw in a mythical hat.

Stoops managed the clock very well against WV and OSU.

Fans like you deserve to have Riley for a coach and Vaz or whatever his name is at QB.

Riley was outcoached by Mack Brown of all people. Just pathetic.

I agree. Interesting personality, good with the players, talks the talk.....not really very good at coaching or organization. I get his record, but still not impressed.

No, I'm not. I'm saying that I'm not that impressed with Riley. He totally screwed up that game. Oregon State should never have let that game get away.

Riley is a very good coach. I'm not sure he would be a good fit at OU so he wouldn't be at the top of my list but the guy can coach and his teams tend to over achieve.

How long exactly have you followed Oregon State football?

The Beavers don't attract anywhere near the talent level of programs like Texas. Or USC, or Stanford, or anyone else in the PAC-12 really; yet he has consistently beaten those programs both on the road and at home. You can't just select one game and use it to sum up a guys whole career, lol.

Their class rankings over the last 4 years have been 52, 54, 44, 55 and they currently have the 53rd ranked class and only 1 4 star recruit committed. To win as consistently as he has despite the gap in talent is impressive.

I would thoroughly enjoy seeing what Mike could do with the talent OU can attract.
