Officially the caste system is abolished. Unofficially, while dying, it is still alive and well. Several things really jumped out a me:
1. In the office there are people whose only job is to go around and pick up the dinner plates and coffee cups from the workers desks and clean them.
2. In the office it is very clear that the worker bees will never be considered for management positions even though many are smarter and work harder than their managers. You do not move up in the ranks.
3. In the hotels, there is a secured wing where single women stay. They don't have a choice and these are hotels that cater to foreigners.
4. The hotels and finer homes all have walls, gates and armed security guards. Even in the areas where the best hotels are, you do not go outside the walls for a walk after dark
The most vivid memory I have is riding down a street and seeing a little girl get up from using the bathroom. No privacy, nothing to clean herself. My driver never even noticed her because she was beneath him. I've been to a lot of poor places in the US and have never seen anything that heartbreaking.
