Fiesta Bowl: K-State vs Oregon

Gonna go ahead and start this now so we can discuss it.

I think everyone has this in their Top 4 bowl games of the year.

Listening to The Rush segment with Jake Trotter today and I think Trotter put it best, Oregon is essentially Baylor on roids, so for K-State to win this, they have to win the first quarter, which will probably be the most telling.

Gotta love this match-up, the Ducks high-speed offense vs the Wildcats unstoppable grinding machine. I originally picked Oregon to win, but with the distractions going on with Chip Kelly, I'm now picking Kansas State. As with every game this season, Collin Klein will be the difference maker.

This game is a tough one to predict. Part of me says that KState can't keep up with the Oregon offense but the other part says KState is well enough coached and has good enough athletes that they can play with anybody.

As a BU diehard here is my take on Oregon:

Offense: Same kind of scheme with athletic but less consistent WR's and a fast but young and streaky QB that I would not take over Florence at this point in his career. Similar OL although BU protects the passer a hair better. BU has more balance IMO.

Defense: Oregon is probably most like Tech schematically. Smaller & quicker with a penchant for bringing blitzes. Not the shutdown unit they have had in other years.

It is going to be critical for KSU to put the game on Mariota either by dropping a safety down or tightening the alignment of their WLB & Nickel LB.

On the other side of the ball Oregon LOVES to bring pressure and frequently uses single coverage. Klein must make them pay for it.

KSU has a good shot here as I don't have nearly as much respect for UO's passing game as our own. Frankly it's been the biggest thing holding them back ever since Dennis Dixon went down mid-2007. Yeah they get quality stats but so does David Ash a lot of the time and that doesn't mean jack. It's about how they get those numbers and what throws they are asked to make. I really think they are a spread version of Bama- tough to defend in the air when the run is clicking and you must account for it. Average at best without the run threat.

I kinda agree with the comparison of Oregon to Baylor except Oregon is far superior to Baylor. I think this game is going to be a wipe out of KSU by a far better team. KSU beat OU on the basis of one OU fumble recovery in the end zone. Take that away and it is a KSU loss. KSU has been the benefactor of a lot of luck this year and luck is a part of the winning equation.

I know everyone looks at UO as this run and gun fast break team but they are a spread the defense out and run to the hole type of team. I see the Old Man with over a month to prepare a defense that has some pretty good players of its own. His teams don't make mistakes and can put some points up of their own. I'd love to see KSU win and will be pulling for them. I'm thinking a score in the 31-24 range.

Oregon has too much team speed for KSU. I agree with Sooner**** that KSU has gotten a ton of bounces and calls to go their way this year to put them where they are at. Can't make a living on lucky bounces and timely penalties. Having said that, if anybody knows how to make a game slow, tedious, and ugly it's Snyder. I hope KSU is able to pull this one out.

Chip Kelly doesn't think time of possession is an important factor in winning ball games. Bill Synder thinks TOP is the most important factor in winning ball games. This isn't quite the LSU/OSU match-up some wanted to see in last years BCSNCG, but it's the next best thing.

KSU wins this one. Living on the west coast I get to watch a lot of the PAC12 games and I think KSU will do the same thing to Oregon that Stanford did. They will slow the game down, make it about TOP, take away the big plays and make Oregon work for every yard they get. KSU gets a lot of practice each season preparing for a team like Oregon.

It would be a shoot out with UO probably winning. Neither team would consistently get stops but they'd probably get more.

My point above was differentiating the offenses as I think KSU matches up better against UO than they did against BU.
