OKLAHOMA CITY -- One of the most divisive issues of the 2012 legislative session apparently will be revisited this spring, with at least one "personhood" bill already filed.

    Rep. Mike Reynolds

State Rep. Mike Reynolds, R-Oklahoma City, is author of House Bill 1029, the Personhood Act of 2013. As written, the bill appears to be virtually identical to one that led to a bitter fight in the House before failing to get a vote on the floor.
The bill states that life begins at conception -- which is already part of state law -- and that "unborn children have protectable interests in life, health, and well-being," and that Oklahoma law "shall be interpreted and construed to acknowledge on behalf of the unborn child at every stage of development all the rights, privileges, and immunities available to other persons, citizens, and residents of this state."

If state law already says that life begins at conception why are folks having such a problem with unborn children having some reasonable form of protection?

Because it's an end-around to ban abortion. Because it's already been found unconstitutional in other states. Because it has really bad unintended consequences.

If a fetus is a "person" with all legal rights, it can own or inherit property, right?
    1. Get pregnant
    2. Man dies, fetus inherits money
    3. Woman is then financially encouraged to get an abortion because once she does:
    4. Woman gets inherited money from slain baby.

Only by registration. I am a registered republican who supported Obama.

Why don't republicans just stay out of women's uteri?

That doesn't sound like much fun. And it makes it difficult to propagate the species.

Oh, and he's not a Gore supporter by registration. He's that by action.

I'm not a fan of people who try to grandstand and gain recognition via these types of bills . . . but I'm a fan of people who are sincerely wanting to protect the rights of those who can't do it for themselves.

I guess this is one of Mallen's secular decisions where he doesn't want a person's religious beliefs to come into play?

Actually, this is a decent example. There seems to be one path that is supported by practicality, logic and reason.
    1. These laws have already been found to be unconstitutional in other places
    2. These laws have negative unintended consequences.
    3. This exact law already didn't make it out of committee in Oklahoma once and likely won't get any more traction this time.

If this is being forwarded because God told him to do it, in spite of the foregoing, he's a religious nutjob that doesn't need to be in office squandering our tax-based resources.

Reynolds isn't a grandstander. He believes in what he's doing.

Ok . . . but if you take Mallen's points into consideration can you see where someone might infer a bit of grandstanding?

Sure. But if you've talked to or met Reynolds you'd know he's not.
