    Let's Talk Bourbon

Became my drink of choice back in 2005 when my Mother in Law was living with us.

Started with this and now sample different makers to see the difference.

Still like this very much...goes great in Diet Coke. Its also very good for bourbon sauce.

    Want to try this.....but it's $80 smackers a bottle......

Has anyone tried Basil Hayden's? I have recently and it might be my favorite bourbon now.

If you're mixing your bourbon with coke, diet coke or anything else, you're doing it wrong.

I personally don't, but know others that do. For me, just some ice and a splash of water.

Basil, Booker's and Blanton's are all good. I also enjoy **** Creek, Woodford Reserve and Four Roses.

If you are going to use ice, I recommend one large cube, so it doesn't melt too quickly and water down the bourbon.

    This.

But really, I don't see the need for ice in bourbon. What's wrong with straight?

I got one of those round ice cube makers for my bourbon. Awesome! Now need to perfect the clear ice ball. I drink my Cognac neat.

    Bookers and Blantons

Basil Hayden and Bakers are pretty damn sweet, so I have to be in the mood for that.

Better still are some Rye Whiskeys/Bourbons.

If any of you cats are in or if you visit Houston anytime soon you *HAVE* to go to Anvil Bar & Refuge. They have some bourbons and scotches that will blow you out of the water...and if you want, they'll make you some ridiculous ****tails w/ your favorite bourbons. Those bartenders are ridiculous. (It's the kind of place that if you walk in and ask for a Jack and Coke, they'll laugh and tell you no.)

Tell them that if they gets a chance, to go at a slower time. I'm sure the Friday and Saturday night are a little hectic in there because they're crafting ****tails and there are sure to be people who expect to get a rum and diet in less than 5 minutes.

I used to think this, but there are commercials for Moët, etc. nowadays.

I tried Kraken rum (long before their ad campaign...I wish the rest of the country had Spec's liquor) and I really liked it for a dark/****ed.

Basil is almost a little *too* smooth for my tastes. It's more of a straight shot/sipper. I like manhattans, so I often prefer a little oomph in my bourbon for those.

A Manhattan has bitters in it.

Enjoy your sugar water, at least vermouth has alcohol!

Although, they do both have **** **** cherries in them.

Small batch fan too. I like **** Creek, neat. And Jefferson's Reserve but it's really hard to find around here

Damnit, I forget that bitters are in a Manhattan. But it's cherry juice, not just cherries in a Manhattan, so at the end of the day, they're quite a bit sweeter than Old Fashioneds

    I actually make Dry Manhattans.
    Substitute dry vermouth for sweet
Substitute an extra dash of bitters and twist of lemon for cherry juice and cherry

I use sweet vermouth, but just a splash. Probably about a 4 or 5:1 ratio of bourbon to bermouth. Angostura bitters, but sometimes I'll dash in a little orange bitters just for the smell, and usually about two tablespoons (not the measurement, but an actual spoon you'd eat with) of cherry juice. Sometimes I leave the fruit out, but usually put the juice in. When you have a really bourbonny bourbon, it kicks through the vermouth and cherry juice just perfectly.

if it's basil I'm drinking, might as well slug it from the bottle, it's so smooth.

Besides, there are hundreds of years of development of different ****tails. If you ONLY drink bourbon straight- that doesn't make you manly. You're an idiot that sacrifices many different pleasures based on your own meaningless self-perception. Drink what you like while respecting your liquor. (I have several single malts at home that only get one ice cube and never anything more {unless you're talking some cask strength ****, then it gets plenty of water because it should}.)

I'm not saying go out there and drink a flirtini. But who gives a ****? There's nothing pussier than worrying about how manly other men think you are.

My wife got me started on white wines lately. We're really stretching our legs on "**** fuel" (pinot grigio). I'm sure it's neither manly nor aficionado stuff, but we like it.

If you only have cheapish bourbon, mix it with 7up. It has a nice caramelly cream soda effect.

I can stomach white wines if I hafta, but they're just too sweet for my taste. My all time favorite wine is merlot.

Pinot grigio isn't really sweet, so you might be able to get down with it. The best ones are crisp and acidic, IMO. Three Pears and A to Z make really drinkable ones.
