My basset Mabel had puppies & her nips were the first things to change. Basset hounds, btw, are hi-larious pregnant dogs.

Take a box cutter and slit the dogs belly open. If you see tiny dog looking fetuses, then the dog was pregnant.
If you don't see them then the dog was not pregnant.
You'll probably have to get a new dog.

I have 1 bassett and had to put her big sister down about a year and a half ago. Awesome dogs!
I lost both my bassets in 2012 - Mabel in May & Lucy (her pup) in Dec. They really are awesome
