I'm talking just the plain ol' Kindle that's subsidized by ads. Anyone have this? Are the ads that annoying to deal with? Is it worth the $20 extra to get one without ads?

The ads aren't bad. We have several Kindles in the library system here for testing and supporting our customers. The ads only appear when the device is not being used. It shows up as the screensaver and I believe a small ad on the bottom of the home screen. There are no ads visible at all while reading ebooks.
I've actually purchased a few books suggested by the ads, so I'm glad it's there. Like SoonerDude said, it's not as though they're popping up when you're turning the pages of a book, just when the device is "off".
Get a Nexus 7 instead. Its better and does more things.

We got the Note 10.1 and it's a hoss... quad-core processor, and it moves silky smooth... I've been playing with the stylus on some photos and it is really cool. Comes with a watered down version of PhotoShop, probably the best "stock" photo editor I've seen on a tablet and the stylus really let's you get detailed. It's about $100 more than the regular Galaxy Tab, but worth it IMO.
Buy the one with ads. If they don't bother you, great. But if they do, you can log into Amazon online, go to the place you manage the device, and pay the $20 to remove them forever.
I have a Kindle Paperwhite and did it. Takes 20 seconds.
I got one for Christmas, the ads don't bother me. Only see them on the front screen or maybe the menu. Haven't noticed them when reading. Save the money and buy some books.
In addition to books, there are browser plug ins that let you easily clip web articles and send them to the kindle for later reading. Can also email it documents.
