They are stimulating an important part of the US economy.
i think this would be a good move and shouldn't cost too much to implement. however, the cards will still be able to be used at walmart to buy a a pack of gum and then take cash up to the limit allowed....so it will just add a step into someones night of entertainment on our tax dollars.
They need to limit it to credit only, preventing them from drawing cash back or have some kind of hold on purchases do that thy could be verified as legitimate needs. No buying shotloads of cookies, booze, cigs and other crap on our money. Just necessities. Milk, meat, bread, veggies, cereal.

Before this gets blown up into some ZOMG HUGE deal, let's keep that in mind. If they can make these changes, and it won't cost too much (as in almost none dollars) to implement, I'm all for it. If it's going to take major system changes that will be costly, it's not worth it. In that scenario it would cost more than it would save.According to the state Department of Human Services, over 300,000 people receive monthly state funds via direct deposit,or debit card. But only about 3,000 of those are traditional welfare, or TANF recipients.
it really doesn't matter what safegaurds are put in place, if someone wants to abuse the system, they will figure out a way to do so. i have seen some crazy stuff! i'm sure others (mcrib etc.) have too!

My flex spending account (section 125) card is a "smart card". I cannot use it to purchase something not on the approved list. How freaking hard would it be to make these cards "smart" as well. If you aren't using it for the right items, there is no money there for you. No cash, just access to funds that are approved. Seems pretty simple and "smart" to me.

Drug testing to be on welfare should be mandatory

IMO, there's enough major overhaul that needs to be done that it might be worth the money to do it. Never mind that part of said overhaul would be dropping a bunch of bull**** waste spending.
I guess I'm missing how an overhaul of the cash benefit debit MasterCard system would result in "dropping a bunch of spending". Unless you change the eligibility requirements/benefit allocation tables, you're going to pay out the exact same amount of money. The only difference would be you would be changing (in theory) what some of the money is spent on once it is paid out. While that is a noble goal, and certainly something I think we should do if it is financially feasible (see my first post above), if it would result in even more government spending then wouldn't it kind of be defeating the purpose?
Single moms in college will suffer for this policy.
It would be simple to add it, but it isn't going to be. The dems like being the party of the poor and disenfranchised and buy their votes by making sure they can spend the taxpayers money on whatever they want.
In California they found that nearly 4 million a year from welfare cards was being spent in casinos and strip clubs. Schwarzenegger and the lib dems plan was to simply make recipients promise to not use them at those locations anymore...
Problem solved...
If FSA spending can be audited so can this.
How about state owned strip clubs?

How about, if you use the card wrong like in a casino or strip club, you get your state aid cut off for good.
If in the strip club, I know I can lick a dollar and stick it to her thigh; do I swipe the card in her crack?
