NewsOK Incoming Freshman Hatari Byrd will start at safety

The coaches told him he would:

NORMAN — Oklahoma must replace both of its starting safeties next season, and OU commitment Hatari Byrd told The Oklahoman one of the spots already belongs to him.

Byrd, a four-star prospect from Central High in Fresno, Calif., said Sooner coaches have told him that he's going to start as a true freshman.
“I'm going to come in and work really hard — that's the type of player I am — but they told me I'm going to be the starter,” Byrd said in a telephone interview.

“They told me it's my spot.”

There's very little doubt he will be the starter.

I'm not sure it's something I would go so public about though. But, I'm guessing NewsOk probably cornered him.

Of course he will. Who is his competition? Gabe Lynn?

Mike Stoops was quoted last month as saying that a "big-time safety" was enrolling at mid-term. That comment obviously referred to Ahmad Thomas.

I think what the coaches tell players is that they think they are good enough to start if they come here and work hard. I seriously doubt that he was promised he would start, especially when he doesn't even know whether he would play strong or free safety.

Our returning secondary is Colvin and fan favorite Gabe Lynn. Who else? Wilson played some in our 7 DB debacle?

Wilson doesn't seem smooth enough to cover wr's. Just my opinion.

god...this statement scares the **** out of me. According to the roster, looks like Simon, Sanchez, or Johnson would be the other corner. We have ZERO cornerback commits, unless the expectation is Stanvon Taylor playing CB. We REALLY, REALLY need to land LJ Moore.

Interestingly, and perhaps this has been discussed already, TREY FRANKS is on the updated roster as a DB.

Wilson couldn't cover Bounce...neither could Lynn

huh...4 of the 5 DTs on our roster right now were 4* coming out of high school. Would be great if they could play like 4*s.

It would be great if they could all stay eligible and not be suspended.

The quicker Gabe Lynn can get off the field the better for OU defense.

This. If the defense is young, aggressive, and shows some improvement throughout the season, I'll be ok taking some lumps knowing the next year should see big time improvement.

Gabe Lynn is a five star cover corner, why would fans be weak on him? We need to worry about 3 star Colvin

I always wonder how a statement like that plays in the locker room.

Starting is no big deal. Stoops was thinking sure ill start you and then pull you right back out. Getting promised/guaranteed significant playing time is what he should have asked for.

I thought OU had a policy where they NEVER promised any recruit a starting position.

"the position is yours if you want to take it (work for it and earn it)"

I'm guessing it went something like that.

I like he kids confidence. Now he must walk the walk and prove his work ethic. Anything is better than Javon Harris IMO

If he can do anything to keep West Virginia below 700 total yards this year, I'm down.

I envision us in a massive substitution - both sides of the ball - after the first play in our opener

He said on a chat on SN that he wasnt told he would definitely start but that a spot was open and he would have every chance to win it

Just one more piece for Mike to run his 2-9 defense next year.

Hatari Byrd: "Yeah, they didn’t exactly say that. They said there’s an opening for it"
