Shepard plays slot when OU is in the 4 WR sets. Right now, Saunders is better in the 3 receiver sets.

Evans may be ahead of Caleb. I expect Evans will see action on special teams.

Mike Stoops said to watch out of Hayes and C Johnson in the spring. Would you rather Gabe Lynn was on the field for EVERY snap? I didn't think so.

From a purely physical standpoint the defense doesn't look bad. The young DL will be much more athletic than the group just departed. Whether it shows up on the field is a crap shoot.

A lot of youth on the roster. Only count 17 scholly players on the roster so in "14 ships will be real tight unless a lot of players get passed over and bolt.

It would likely be 5 or 6 DBs on the field with 3 down lineman most times, which doesn't give me great confidence in stopping the run. Need to be much better in the trenches regardless of the formation.

I like this defense against teams like K State and Texas, but it would get shredded by Baylor/OSU/WVU/etc. How would this change against teams like that?

Also, and I don't care what some say, the guys listed at one of the ILB positions are basically like safeties (Corey Nelson, Franklin, Striker, and Alexander), and our FS is basically a 3rd corner. This is basically a 3-3-5, but those guys can come up in run support. It would be flexible enough to defend the run against UT, K-State, ISU, TCU and ND, but could float back into coverage against the WVU/Baylor/OSU/Tech/KU. It is more flexible than what we have been running because some of those DEs we have are really OLBs and stand-up DEs, not 3-point stance traditional DEs. For our DTs, we have some athletic guys who would fit more into that mode. Could you imagine the havoc a guy like Phillips could wreak? He was a TE and DE in High School.

I agree. I don't think we have the personnel to play 3-4 full time, but I could see it situationally.

I think having that many new starters on defense is a good thing. The bad thing is having WV and ND 2 of the first four games. This defense won't have the expectations like in the past so they shouldn't have any pressure on them. I think we will be pretty decent this year.

WVU is a non-issue. Their offense is completely gutted and their defense sucks until proven otherwise.

I still think that we are better than all but 3 teams on our schedule. Two of those (OSU and TCU) we are even, at worst. The only team on the schedule that I think is truly better than us is ND, and hopefully Josh has learned his lesson. More than anything, I want to see two things: the maturation of Bell as a starter and the transformation of the defense.

I have heard that he has played better and shown to throw better than Blake. The staff thinks he is smart enough. They think he will be ready. Last time they were ready for a RS FR to start was 2007. Some dude named Sam.

I think our offensive line will probably be the strength of the team. We've got 7 guys with starting experience in the two deep. That kind of depth and experience couldn't be more important to a team that will be breaking in a new quarterback.
