Sterling Sherpard will be a starter. Jordan Evans will be ahead of Caleb Gastelum. Quentin Hayes will not be 1st team.

I don't think Jaz starts at the first of the year if he is out of the doghouse (BIG IF) he'll be in the rotation at the first of the year

    Good work though

Shepard plays slot when OU is in the 4 WR sets. Right now, Saunders is better in the 3 receiver sets.

Evans may be ahead of Caleb. I expect Evans will see action on special teams.

Mike Stoops said to watch out of Hayes and C Johnson in the spring. Would you rather Gabe Lynn was on the field for EVERY snap? I didn't think so.

Spoke to Hayes's ex-girlfriend and she said he is hungry to get on the field and working very hard. IMO he is a better choice than Lynn.

Maybe M. Anderson will play some at DE? I would like to see what he can do there in a 4-X.

  19. #19
Are we ruling out the "move to the 3-4" that's been reported? Here are my thoughts FWIW; the SLB could slide into a SDE spot next to Phillips when necessary for a 4-2-5.

SDE - Jordan Phillips; Marquis Anderson; Charles Tapper
NT - Quincy Russell; Jordan Wade; Damon Williams; Torrea Peterson
WDE - Chuka Ndulue; Matt Dimon; Michael Onuoha

SLB - Rashad Favors; Geneo Grissom; Chaz Nelson
MLB - Frank Shannon; P.L. Lindley; Rashad Favors
WLB - Corey Nelson; Aaron Franklin; Dom Alexander

Roy - Eric Striker; Ahmad Thomas; Gabe Lynn

LCB - Aaron Colvin; Gary Simon; Zach Sanchez
SS - Hatari Byrd; Quentin Hayes; Ahmad Thomas
FS - Julian Wilson; Gabe Lynn; Trey Franks
RCB - Stanvon Taylor; Cortez Johnson; Kass Everett; LJ Moore

NB - Kass Everett; Cortez Johnson; Eric Striker; Gabe Lynn

From a purely physical standpoint the defense doesn't look bad. The young DL will be much more athletic than the group just departed. Whether it shows up on the field is a crap shoot.

A lot of youth on the roster. Only count 17 scholly players on the roster so in "14 ships will be real tight unless a lot of players get passed over and bolt.

How are we going to run a 3-4 with no linebackers. It looks like to me that the d-line will be better than the LBs next year.

I agree we shouldn't run a typical 3-4 due to our linebacker personnel and the prevalence of spread offense in the Big 12. It would likely be 5 or 6 DBs on the field with 3 down lineman most times, which doesn't give me great confidence in stopping the run. Need to be much better in the trenches regardless of the formation.

Some of the DEs would be LBers, if we go to a 3-4.

3-4 Defense (Which makes more sense)

SDE: J. Phillips; J. Wade; Huggins
NT: Russell; Dam. Williams; C. Walker
    WDE: M. Walker; Peterson; Romar

OLB: Grissom; Tapper; Chaz Nelson; Okoronkwo
ILB (covering slot): Corey Nelson; A. Franklin; Striker; Alexander
ILB (more traditional MLB): Shannon; Lindley; Favors; Evans
    OLB: Ndulue; Onuoha; Ward; Dimon

    CB: Colvin; Everett; Moore; Austin
    SS: Byrd; Lynn; Sanchez;
    FS: Wilson; Hayes; Franks; Thomas
    CB: C. Johnson; Simon; Taylor

    P: Barnett; Steed; Seibert
    K: Hunnicutt; Hosek

    QB: Bell; Knight; Thompson
RB: DD Williams; Clay; Finch; Ross; Smith; Brooks; Ford
    FB: Millard; Ripkowski; Musil
    TE: Green; McNamara; Grant
    Slot: Saunders; Shepard; Bennett; Smallwood
    LWR: Metoyer; Woods; Cavil; Bennett
    RWR: Reynolds; Neal; Bester; Young
LT: T. Thompson; St. John; N. Hughes
LG: Shead (if healthy); Kasitati (if healthy); Marrs
    C: Ikard; Darlington; Woods
RG: Evans (if healthy); Irwin; Savage
    RT: Dar. Williams; Farniok; Daimler

Admittedly, I am least certain on DB and WR, as those guys are used so many different ways. It also makes me wonder what ever happened to Courtney Gardner.

Don't care to see Jaz in a sooner uniform this year. He is part of the trash that has made this team what it is the last couple of years.

I like this defense against teams like K State and Texas, but it would get shredded by Baylor/OSU/WVU/etc. How would this change against teams like that?

Also, and I don't care what some say, the guys listed at one of the ILB positions are basically like safeties (Corey Nelson, Franklin, Striker, and Alexander), and our FS is basically a 3rd corner. This is basically a 3-3-5, but those guys can come up in run support. It would be flexible enough to defend the run against UT, K-State, ISU, TCU and ND, but could float back into coverage against the WVU/Baylor/OSU/Tech/KU. It is more flexible than what we have been running because some of those DEs we have are really OLBs and stand-up DEs, not 3-point stance traditional DEs. For our DTs, we have some athletic guys who would fit more into that mode. Could you imagine the havoc a guy like Phillips could wreak? He was a TE and DE in High School.

All of this talk of moving to a 3-4 is fun and we have figured out the depth chart. However, I can't imagine that OU would play much 3-4 if that's their base. Alabama doesn't even play much 3-4, because of the many teams they face who use 4 WRs frequently.

I agree. I don't think we have the personnel to play 3-4 full time, but I could see it situationally.

I think having that many new starters on defense is a good thing. The bad thing is having WV and ND 2 of the first four games. This defense won't have the expectations like in the past so they shouldn't have any pressure on them. I think we will be pretty decent this year.

WVU is a non-issue. Their offense is completely gutted and their defense sucks until proven otherwise.

I still think that we are better than all but 3 teams on our schedule. Two of those (OSU and TCU) we are even, at worst. The only team on the schedule that I think is truly better than us is ND, and hopefully Josh has learned his lesson. More than anything, I want to see two things: the maturation of Bell as a starter and the transformation of the defense.

I have heard that he has played better and shown to throw better than Blake. The staff thinks he is smart enough. They think he will be ready. Last time they were ready for a RS FR to start was 2007. Some dude named Sam.

That actually is not that shitty of a depth chart on paper. Our O-Line will be stout.

I think our offensive line will probably be the strength of the team. We've got 7 guys with starting experience in the two deep. That kind of depth and experience couldn't be more important to a team that will be breaking in a new quarterback.
