    Lawn Care

After searching like crazy, it seems we lost our lawn care thread.

I noticed everyone in neighborhood has had their lawns sprayed as they are all painted green. What would be the ideal chemical to use right now to take care of weeds that are currently showing in dormant bermuda and what chemical for pre emergent?

I have a bunch of roundup pro but sounds like that could damage the bermuda at this point if I ran my sprayer over entire yard.

Honestly I've found it's just cheaper and less hassle to let someone else do the pre-emergent. I'll handle the rest of the fertilizing myself but never had any luck with pre-emergent stuff I've found in stores.

roundup/2-4-d .....if you're in oklahoma....the bermuda is dormant and roundup won't hurt it...

Spray it when it's a tab bit windy. It helps it spread over the grass a little better.

i'm not terribly knowledgeable about fescue.....but if it's green.......you won't want to use roundup......roundup kills anything that's green....
if you're just trying to kill broadleaf type weeds....2-4-d by itself would do the trick......

Ya, it stays green year round so I've avoided the round up.

Sounds like you need a Helluvaman.

For 2-4-d to be effective does the temperature need to stay above X degrees for a certain period of time? What is X and how long does it take to take effect?

yes...plants shut down at high and low temps and don't absorb chemical effectively....
i would wait until it gets above 50 degrees for about 4 hours ....

I've read that the grass may not be as dormant as I think but our nights have still been very cold and that shit looks dormant as can be. In our current situation, roundup will be fine?

    yes....if it looks dormant...roundup won't hurt it...

    that would work...
wouldn't hurt to throw in some roundup for a better kill on the weeds...
an interesting note on the 2-4-d.......it acts like a hyperdose of steroids.......the plant grows so fast it just blows itself up ........so the key is the plant must be GROWING........if it's cloudy or cold or the weed is close to seeding out.....it won't be as effective....
roundup otoh is a growth inhibitor.......the plant just stops growing and very slowly dies....
it's always best to have multiple chemistries working simultaneously to get the best kill.....

I put pre emergent down Monday. I can assume the snow wont harm it either way?

  25. #25
No experience to offer but I would assume no. Most of that stuff is rain proof after a couple hours so I would assume snow is no different.

  26. #26
pre-emergent chemicals REQUIRE snow or rain to activate them.....
the moisture takes the chemical into the soil where it creates a barrier of protection....

Yeah I know it said water after but I was expecting rain, just didnt know if freezing temps would affect the potency of it

Round up or Pendulum will work great. I use both.

Weeds grow faster than turf. Take care of the lawn and you won't be mowing so often.

This. If your grass has some green already then it may be weeds. Unless your grass just stays green all year round.

If you want to try and save some bucks instead of Round Up look for a Glyphosate substitute...

selling to you city slickers is a small fraction of their business...
i buy glyphosate in 275 gallon totes....i think i paid about $11/gal last fall....i've paid as low as $9/gal in recent years........monsanto wants no part of that business...

How many glyphosate resistant crops does Monsanto still have under patent?

it's crazy how much roundup cost before the patent expired.....i remember atwoods selling 2 gallon jugs for $125.....
no-till farming would have caught on 10-15 years earlier if monsanto hadn't been so greedy....but that was their right...
