Thread: Kittle out

Heupel is far from perfect at calling plays, but he's far more balanced than Norvell.
Uh, no. NU's plays from his coordinator years:

    2004- 412 runs, 322 passes
    2005- 420 runs, 444 passes
    2006- 554 runs, 411 passes

It's really unfair to judge Norvell one way or the other as an OC because he's yet to be in a decent situation as one. At NU, they had to overhaul the personnel from Solich's option O to the WCO, & in his one year as OC at UCLA, they were down to their 4th string QB by the end of the year.

Apparently, you are not receiving the message ZCAA0G is conveying. He never said it was all on Landry and you haven't disputed a single thing he stated about Landry. The other part of being a championship QB is being willing to put it on the line, physically, when needed. Show your teammates you're willing to give it all to succeed. Sam's flip/launch against osu, Jason's ability to get yards with his feet even after both knees having surgery, Nate's willingness to take a hit in the pocket and still delivering the throw. These are all part of the 'IT' factor we all want to see in our quarterback. Make those around you better and play harder. As much as I like Landry and all he stands for, he didn't have these qualities. I'd like my daughters to marry a guy like Landry, but I'm looking forward to the post-Landry days.

Blake seems to inspire the team with his play. No, the Belldozer wasn't 100% successful, but I felt a charge to the team when he entered the game.
He can make plays with his feet if the play breaks down. That's what we're all hoping for with this change.

Exactly he could be a worse QB for all we know. Let him prove it out there. All we've seen him do is be a glorified full back. I'm sorry but nobody is really running the T-formation as a main offense anymore. What we really need to do is get away from this spread stuff.

I'm hardly qualified to judge, but Heupel hasn't done anything to cause me to really dislike him as OC. Hard to call a run game when you know your OL can't block??? Hard to stay with the passing game when your QB keeps slumping like Landry did.
I was a little disappointed with OU's lack of creativity in the red zone but lack of a TE may have limited them some there???

Although Bob was maybe a bit late on pulling the trigger on some staff changes I imagine it is hard to do so after working with the same people for so long. I would think that anybody who has been involved in leadership roles has to go through something like this during their careers. Hopefully it is a lesson learned for him and won't be as hard to implement staff changes in the future if their is need to do so.

We still have to see if changes are really made first. We don't know if anything will change philosophically as of now. We have the same OC, DC, and head coach. Those areas dictate philosophy not position coaches.

We do know Blake Bell isn't afraid to take one for the team unlike Landry Jones. That's a start. We also know that he can run, which Landry Jones couldn't, that's another start. So right there, he has two things that Landry Jones didn't. He will easily be a better leader than Landry Jones since Landry Jones wasn't one.

Now we'll just have to see about decision making and passing capability. Landry Jones was more of a liability than an ****et for the past 4 years and I am glad he is gone. He held OU back.

Heupel's offense is nowhere near "balanced"......good God, we were throwing it 70 times a game at the end of the season. Heupel's problem is that he does not have an offensive philosophy

In 2011, Oklahoma was 4th is YPG (532), 10th in points per game (40.3), and 5th in 1st downs per game (26.8)
In 2012, Oklahoma was 10th in YPG (506), 12th in ppg (40.3), and 9th in 1st downs per game (27.3)

Meaning since Josh took over, they are averaging over 500 yards per game, over 40 points per game and are obviously sustaining drives and moving the ball as well as anyone in football with 27 first downs a game. All of this with a QB that most of you have wanted gone for 4 years, no TE, and what most would consider a sub-par o-line. The last time offense was a problem in Norman was 2006 and we all know the circumstances behind that. I agree that they need to run the football better, and obviously they think so to with the staff changes, and Josh needs to improve on some things but he's doing a fine job and will continue to improve on play calling with experience.

You don't get it do you? We can't beat good defenses and will never win another nc will this offense.

Now run the numbers when the Sooners face any defense ranked in the Top 50. The offensive line hasn't been sub-par, it's just been great at p****-blocking and atrocious at run-blocking, which basically makes them average.

The biggest thing Coach Heupel needs to do is pick a tempo. Either execute a normal tempo or an up tempo, but don't change them up right in the middle of the series. More times than not, that has led to OU punting the football. When they stick with either a normal tempo or an up tempo for an entire series, they usually score.

This up-coming season will be a critical one for Coach Heupel. He needs to make sure the Sooner offense doesn't disappear as it did in the KSU, ND and ATM games.

  20. #120
Well I guess we have a different outlook on things, I believe I do get it. I stated that they need to run the ball more effectively, but I see no reason they couldn't win a NC with this offense. I don't think they can win one with the defense they've been playing though. What kind of offense do you think they could have ran this past season in order to win it all? You think they could have won it this year running the same offense but replace the Defense with say 2001 D? Yeah, I'm the one who doesn't get it.

Some of you people are absolutely clueless about the game. In your bizzaro world, scoring 40 a game and have 500 yards of offense isn't good enough. You're probably the same group who ****ed about Switzer's offenses because he gave the ball to the fullback to much.

I agree with the tempo statement, that is one of the things I think he needs to improve on. The other is QB run game, now that we will have a QB that is capable of creating problems with his feet, he really needs to incorporate it into the offense, and I think he will.

A little late???? He's about 4 years too late.

I'm sorry but being the boss means you have to fire people. It's part of the job, and sometimes its people you like. Perhaps he shouldn't pack his staff with buddies he doesn't have the sack to fire when they underperform. That's a very basic, elementary leadership principle.

Saban doesn't go through issues with complacency, underperformance, and nepotism. Saban has won 3 national titles in 4 years. The blueprint for Bob is clear. He needs to stop fighting the fans and the media to protect his internal status quo and embrace the giantness of the program he heads of his own free will, as well as the expectations that come with it, instead of trying to lower the bar of expectations to just beating Texas and winning the conference. Sorry.....this is Oklahoma. We don't lower the bar here and we certainly don't proudly claim "co-championships" or embarr**** ourselves on national TV every season in bowl games because we don't take bowl games seriously and view them as a "scrimmages".

This has all been a good step in the right direction. We hope Stoops is awake now, ready to return the program to excellence, and we wish him well and support him.

Bobs making needed changes. It's very important to hire quality coaches and upgrade the talent & coaching. I'm ready to forget the last few yrs and move forward. Hopefully, we get some great coaches and can move back into the nations elite.

Not saying they have an ear to the pavement in fanworld but it's funny how when the fans start to get irate, heads always roll. Happened with Long...happened with Wilson....happened with Venables......and has now happened with these latest clowns after fan insurrection yet again. And yes, donors are fans; fans who write checks. Who pays the bills for the entire football program through tickets and merch sales as well as donations? Fans.

    By Comparison, OSU was 4th at 93% with 72 trips, 48 TD's (67%), 19 FG.

    Alabama was 13th at 90% with 62 trips, 46 TD's (74%), 10 FG.

Anyone wanting to fire either one of those coordinators???? Of course not, one got a Head Coaching gig (Monken), one will in a year or two (Nussmeier).

Probably wouldn't be wise to do up-tempo all the time because up-tempo works better at various points in the game (Chip Kelly, 2012). Kelly understands that you can't go super fast all the time. It's most effective when you go up-tempo strategically.

Yeah that makes sense. One reason I brought this up is because I don't recall seeing anything official from OU in regards to Kittle or Shipp. All I've seen are reports by the Tulsa World and local sports on the news.

sure would be nice to retain both of them as part of the new recruiting staff...pretty sure Kittle will be but the chances Shipp would do that are low

he will want to coach and will be a sought after commodity if not this year, next year

Those coaches were not clowns, ok maybe Kittle is. People like you are the clowns; people who scream to fire all the coaches any time a game is lost, or the clowns who blame Landry with OU gives up 45 pts, but scores 38.
