Putin is no threat. I was told so in the election last year.

I wonder how close they actually got before getting intercepted. I have a hard time believing that they made into that airspace unnoticed.

Lol... first off, nice headline... They are turboprops, not jets...

I guess this is a story. But, those bombers would be destroyed the instant we wanted them destroyed if they didn't have some other air support. It would be the equivalent of floating a couple of helium balloons in from of some duck hunters as a show of force.

The only way this is really a big story is if we didn't know they were there until we had visual range on them... which could be a possibility, but it's not stated in the article. Not to mention that any type of stealth aircraft kind of defeats the purpose if you can HEAR the engines before they even get to you. lol

    Strange story...

This really isn't a new thing for the Russians. This has been going on since the Cold War. They send their bombers towards our airspace, we intercept them with fighters, a little foreign relations (you know, flipping them the bird) takes place between the aircrews, and they're then escorted it of our airspace and they go home. It's like a game. Anyone who thinks that just because the Soviet Union fell and the Russians are now our friends is sadly mistaken.

Our Navy and China play a particularly fun game of marco/polo with submarines on a pretty regular basis.

And yes, Russia is still most definitely a staunch enemy.

Navies around the world are reincorporating conventional subs into their inventories, mainly due to cost, new technology, and noise generation. China operates Kilo-class diesel-electric subs which are damn good boats. They're also making their own SSNs, but their current boats are fairly noisy compared to our latest subs, more along the lines of first generation 688s. In 10 years they'll be making ships and subs that will be on par with what we make.

Chinese subs look very similar to American subs but then they fall apart in less than a year.

I wouldn't doubt China's advancement in developing their sub or surface fleet. They have certainly been hacking our DOD often enough. What I doubt is their lack of naval history to guide them in having well trained crews and training centers that would be comparable to those in the US and other long standing navies.

But I really have no idea if that is true.

I live on Guam and this wasn't that big of a deal to us. Like a previous poster said, there are a lot of incidents where someone tries to test another country's airspace.

But their long range bombers have props instead of jet engines like ours.

Russian Spy Ship Docks in Havana

Neither Cuban authorities nor state media have mentioned the ship's visit, unlike previous tours by Russian warships. Its visit comes as Venezuela, Havana's current isolated economic and political patron, is facing unprecedented violent protests against President Nicolas Maduro's government.

American military chiefs have been left dumbstruck by an undetected Chinese submarine popping up at the heart of a recent Pacific exercise and close to the vast U.S.S. Kitty Hawk - a 1,000ft supercarrier with 4,500 personnel on board.

By the time it surfaced the 160ft Song Class diesel-electric attack submarine is understood to have sailed within viable range for launching torpedoes or missiles at the carrier.

My brother in law is one of the head maintenance honchos for the U2 program. Usually when I mention that, the response I get is "there's still a U2 program?" Yes, there is. The U2 has all new modern electronics, but they still fly every day.

I don't know what they fly over. All I know is that they go up every day to 73,000 feet and take pictures of stuff. They still have bases in Palmdale, CA, Warner Robbins, GA and somewhere in Central Asia. I got to take a tour of the Palmdale facility. It was fascinating.

What amazes me is that the AF is still flying B-52s.

I'd fly over Kate Upton and take a few pics.
